Easter Egg Hunt at Doyle Park

Last week I had the opportunity to volunteer with my cousin's church, Ethnos helping out a local community center park with their Easter Egg hunt. There were TONS of kids running around and even an Easter bunny roaming around.

The parks team did a great job organizing things and hid a bunch of eggs in the grassy field:

Before I knew it, they released the crazy kids (and parents) who came charging right at me looking for Easter eggs!

Later on, I was able to take some fun photos of the kids with the Easter Bunny.... but my all-time favorite shot was with this sweet lady sitting on his lap!

My Big Announcement for 2010

OK everyone, have a seat because I'm about to rock your world.

I have decided to shoot weddings.

Torrey Pines Golf Course Wedding

WHAT?  THAT's your big announcement?  Well, for some of you it is.  And others of you might be saying, "You're crazy.....everyone already does weddings."  That's the thing.  For years I have stayed away from weddings because everyone else does them.  And do them really, really well.  One of my best friends is an AMAZING, and getting to be quite famous, wedding photographer.

When people ask, "what kind of photography do you do?" I like to respond that I create Luxurious Memories.

So why the change of heart?  --  Well, for many years lots of people have always asked if I do weddings or said something about how I should do weddings because the couples photos I do take are great (their words, not mine :-)  I've always had it in the back of my mind that I would LOVE to shoot weddings because there is sooo much about a wedding that I just love.... capturing that essential moments and image that can be forever remembered and passed down generations, getting that photo that friends and family look at and say THAT'S JESSICA--you captured the essence of who they are in a single millisecond moment in time, creating Luxurious Memories as albums and canvases--things you can showcase on your coffee table or hang up on your wall like a work of art.  I get giddy just thinking about these things.

What I decided to do was come up with a way for me to do all the things I loved about weddings and make it an experience (maybe) more memorable than the actual wedding itself.  The first one might be the most surprising.

I will only shoot FIVE weddings this year.

Five Weddings.  That's it. There are many reasons for this but one of the biggest is that this way I get to form a FRIENDSHIP with the couple and spend time with them.  Looking back at 2009, I realized my favorite clients are the ones I am blessed to be able to call a friend.  We like the same things, know some of the same people, have the same humor, love to live and enjoy life.....we connect.  And they're lifetime clients.  They don't just breeze through my life for an afternoon and move on.  I know their kids and their kids like me. I helped make them postcards Christmas cards.  They are going to fly me out to meet them on their vacation to take professional looking vacation photos.  They followed along everything that happened with my Father passing away.  We share life together. And I love that.

When I thought about it some more, all of my favorite clients came to me because one of their friends recommended them to me.  I feel that is so crucial because that is the way I am.  I rely heavily on my friends opinions and input.  Because of this I decided that I really want to rely on MY friends and people who know ME to help me find the perfect five weddings.  For those of you who know me, I'd guess you recognize that I LOVE taking care of my friends and doing things for them.  So this brings me to my fun little twist:

For each of the five weddings, I will give a Louis Vuitton handbag to the person who referred them.

I want to do this because the ONLY reason I'm even here as a photographer is because friends just like YOU got me here.  And to be bluntly honest, I'm horrible at going out there and selling myself. So I am going to rely on all of you, my friends, to refer me to people--families--who want a lifelong photographer and friend to share life with.

Stay tuned and later this week I'll share more details about the weddings I'll take and how to get your Louis Vuitton!

Red Carpet Treatment and a Ring Flash Shooting Technique

Hello Everyone!

If you haven't already checked it out, take a look at how you can enter to win Adobe Creative Suite 4.  There has been a tremendous response so far (after only a day) and I'm super excited for all my new followers!  Hopefully there will be something on this blog that you'll enjoy and maybe even learn from.

So with that I thought I'd share two things you might want to try out at your next event.  Here's some background, one of my clients threw an amazing 40th birthday party.  Like, THE PARTY of the decade.  You can check out the slideshow on an earlier blog post.  Seriously, if you haven't checked it out go do it now.  This party was insane!

Anyway, I had this idea to literally roll out the red carpet for her guests as they drove up to the valet.  Because the theme of the party was a movie star extravaganza, I thought it would be fun to also put up one of those billboards behind the red carpet you see at movie premiers and what not.

Here you can see a shot of one of the couples walking down the red carpet

As people walked down the red carpet, I was blessed to have some AMAZING shooters with me who flashed away to their hearts content to give a paparazzi-like feel.  Gotta give a quick shout-out to them!  Evan Bishop, Betsy Tomasello, and Kevin Mudd

Everyone LOVED the whole red carpet thing and say they all felt like movie stars!  How cool!!  At the end of the red carpet I setup a ring flash where I took portraits of people as they came by. Here's an awesomely dorky shot of me behind the camera:

And here's how the shots turn ou:

So if you ever need to fancy up an event, try rollout the red carpet for them!

OK, now's where things got interesting.  While standing around dialing my lights in I took a quick shot through the ring flash but without pushing the camera all the way through:

I thought how cool would this be to shoot through!?!  So I asked Kevin to take a quick shot and here's what we got:

Well, I just thought this was the coolest thing ever!!!  I still think Evan and Kevin's twiter avatars are from when we were messing around shooting this :)

Portrait Session with Summer

It feels good to be blogging again!!!  I've been neglecting it for a while but feel like I'm getting back in the swing of things.

Today I want to share some shots from a portrait session I did yesterday with Summer.  We had so much fun down at the beach with some gorgeous weather!!!  There's an awesome little cove spot down at La Jolla that I love to go to where it's secluded and we can relax and not worry about the crowds.  And now that it's daylight savings time it's perfect for sunset beach shoots!

Ohhh, and on an AWESOME note.... an earlier shot I did with her and her friend landed him an audition for Pirates of the Caribbean 3!!! How cool is that!?!?!?!!!

Anyway here are some shots :)

GoBee/Pictage Party Pics, A Duckie, and A WACOM Tablet

So WPPI was great this year.  I got to meet a lot of awesome people and see lots of cool stuff at the Trade Show.  AND, I was honored to be selected as one of a handful of photographers to be a Pictagerazzi.  Check out the photos from all of us at www.pictagerazzi.com !!!

Unfortunately I was sick for most of the conference so I spent most of my time chilling at my MGM hotel room.  All I can say is thank goodness for room service!!!!  But I did have time to snap one shot of the Pixel2Canvas duckie so here it is :)  I think from now on I'm going to take a duckie picture of every hotel room I visit.

One night I was able to make it out I went to the Gobee Bags / Pictage party at the Mandalay Bay. They held it at the 2nd to top floor suite that was HUGE!!!!  Honestly I can't say that I use their stuff but Sara France is AMAZING and totally rocks so go buy something from them anyway.  LOL :)  Here are a few shots I took that didn't go to Pictagerazzi:

Yup, my color balance was off.  For you nerdy photogs out there: this is what happens when you shoot in JPEG and don't realize the subtle shift in color temp from one end of the room to the other.  Ohh well, good enough for government work :)

And here's a shot of me and some friends in the photo booth:

I didn't leave WPPI empty handed though. I got a lot of great photographer's business cards AND got a sweet deal on a WACOM tablet from Midwest Photo Exchange. I LOVE that store and if you're a Strobist fan/follower you'll know why.

Adobe Omniture Summit 2010 Speaking Engagement

I think all of you know that my hobbies include full-contact origami and that I'm a photographer. But I don't think that all of you know that while I'm working on making photography my full-time gig that I have a normal, full-time job (*gasp*!) at Adobe Omniture as a consultant. It's a great job where I basically help companies utilize our products to make more money online. Every year we hold a huge gathering of nerds short and far-sighted alike to come talk about online stuff. This year, I was actually asked to be one of the speakers! So a couple weeks ago off I went to Salt Lake City to be part of this huge thing called the Adobe Omniture Summit 2010.

One thing that I LOVE to do is travel. Don't ask me why but two of the things I love most are living out of a hotel and being in airports/flying. Those are the things I remember most from my trips. Anyway, so I stayed at the amazing Grand America and got upgraded to a suite.
